AI Impact Alliance supports the adoption of Responsible AI since 2017.

Open Call for Contributions!

We’re co-designing a global online repository to navigate the impact of AI on art, culture and knowledge creation.

Who governs the cultural data that trains AI systems, and who benefits from it?

As artificial intelligence restructures creative economies and knowledge systems, decisions about intellectual property, remuneration, and digital cultural sovereignty are being made at speed, often without those most affected at the table. We are undertaking a global mapping of legal developments, policy proposals, litigation trackers, feminist and Indigenous governance models, cultural data space initiatives, and community-led responses to AI’s impact on cultural commons. We invite researchers, artists, civil society organizations, and policy actors to contribute resources and strategic insights to help build a rigorous, independent knowledge infrastructure, one capable of informing rights-based AI governance, strengthening democratic digital economies, and expanding a global network committed to equitable cultural futures.

A quick overview of what’s coming:

February 14, 2026 – Launch of the open call for contributions and expressions of interest. Selected contributors will be invited to participate in a co-design workshop which will be held in March.

March 13, 2026 (11:59 PM ET) – Submission deadline.

April 2026 – Publication of a synthesis report outlining shared priorities, governance options, best practices, and technical and safety recommendations to guide the next phase of development .

Background and Future

The Art-Laws grants and programs, held for the first time in 2024, was an important milestone in arts-led AI governance. Its’ grants and fellowship program for artists of all disciplines interested in the ethical, legal, economic, social and political implications of Generative AI in collaboration with multidisciplinary experts from around the world. Observations and recommendations were submitted to the Art Council of Canada and integrated into a publication on Promising Practices for Uses of Art in the Exploration of AI Ethics as well as in the design of UNESCO’s programs on civic engagement, IP and Culture. In the continuation of the AI on a Social Mission (2018-2022) and Art Impact AI workshops (2019-2020), it has given rise to the co-design of a Repository of resources for artists, cultural workers and civil society organizations to navigate AI.

And, given how the impact of GenAI on the art production value-chain is similar to all knowledge production, our areas of intervention touch on disinformation, online harm, cognitive agency, data sovereignty.
