AI Impact Alliance was born out of a grassroots mouvement when Goddard organized meet ups on the social impacts of AI. When she approached Professor Yoshua Bengio in 2017, she had a vision where AI and Social Sciences researchers would work closer together and integrate the arts (STEAM-based approaches), while creating more opportunities for civil society to be engaged in shaping the future of AI, and its impact on society. Since then, Professor Bengio has supported the Art Impact AI programs and the AI on a Social Mission conferences. The flagship event , AI on a Social Mission, received enthusiastic support from all sectors, especially social entreprise and non-profits, policy makers. Its first edition brought together hundreds of participants from around the world. It has since reached hundreds of thousands of participants from around the world thanks to its partners.
